Polkadot is a blockchain network created by Gavin Wood, who also co-founded and wrote the first smart contracts for Ethereum. Polkadot allows self-sovereign blockchains to interoperate with other blockchains in the ecosystem and benefit from the shared security of the Polkadot Relay Chain. Many chains in Polkadot are built using Substrate, a framework that allows blockchains to be built to individual specification using pre-built modules.
